Teeth grinding/clenching
Teeth grinding, also called bruxism, is a common problem. Bruxism is the habit of unconsciously gritting or grinding the teeth, especially at night or in times of stress. Like teeth clenching, untreated bruxism can cause serious damage to teeth and dental work. Grinding and clenching can lead to worn, sensitive teeth, cracked or broken teeth and fillings, and pain. Over time, uncontrolled grinding can result in teeth that appear short and worn down, affecting your smile. Untreated bruxism can also cause pain and damage to your jaw joint.
Teeth grinding and clenching is most damaging when it happens during sleep, when you cannot consciously change your behaviour.
Repairing the damage from a lifetime of teeth grinding can be costly, complicated and very time consuming. It is, however, easy to prevent this damage. A specialized mouth guard, sometimes called a bruxism guard or a night guard can be custom made by Seine River Dental Centre for your teeth to protect them from the damaging effects of night-time grinding and clenching.
If you suspect you might be clenching or grinding your teeth, talk to your dental professional. Early intervention with a bruxism guard can help prevent the need for extensive future dental treatment.
